The auditor notes the Village of Vernon general fund was in a DEFICIT of $313,886 in 2023
The board plans to obtain over $1 million in new debt for 2025.
Auditor states "quite a deficit was put on the books in 2022" and project improvement funds were not used on road projects. Auditor also notes that she has been informed there was a change in clerk in November 2024 that she was told will positively impact the financials.
Please note: Brad Calder was hired in January 2023 so the negative fund balance was obtained before he was hired and improved after hire. The village clerk in 2022 was Karen Schuh. Auditor notes 2023 showed improvement over 2022.
Lack of internal controls surrounding financials has been noted on village audits since 2019 and has not been corrected. This is noted in the audit video around the 24 minute mark and also on the annual SAS letters in the audit link above. However, the board opted out of the SAS letters that summarize concerns in the most recent 2022 & 2023 audits.

Village President Jeff Millies
Fire Commission Secretary Tom Tomasik
Trustee #3 Dylan Neumann
Trustee #2 Gary Finch
Village Clerk/Administrator Karen L. Schuh
Karen Schuh is noted as Finance Committee President as of the most recent agenda, October 2024. The last finance committee minutes uploaded are from 2021.
